Saturday's fast cruise race is cancelled.

Fast cruise organiser Mark Miles has just called Solent CG and QHM re. Nav Warning 1/08 and has called off Saturday's race. The 2,000 tonnes of timber washed from the deck of the Ice Prince when she sank off Portland Bill was reported in Sandown Bay this morning and has already appeared at the Nab. It is expected to start being washed ashore near Selsey overnight and tomorrow. They expect it to be picked up by the tide in the deep water channel and head towards the forts tomorrow - just as we expect to start our FC. Some of the bales of wood (3m x 3m x 10m) have broken up into 10m lengths. Some are intact and mostly submerged. Huge sheets of plywood (four 8x4 sheets joined together) are also in the raft of debris. Both QHM and the CG "STRONGLY RECOMMEND" the LSC do not try and have a yacht race through the middle of it.

Weather forecasts are all over the place for tomorrow but Solent CG said gales today and - at worst - it could be F6 gusting F8 tomorrow, rough or very rough, and raining. This won't help with looking out for bits of sunken wood the size of Temptress, adds Mark.

"The sad fact is that we have been made aware of the problem, we have asked for advice, and both QHM and the CG have told us not to do it. Under these circumstances there's nothing we can do but call it all off. I'm Sorry."

Dinner has been cancelled at the Langstone Hotel. If any Northney based crews, or anybody else who wants to go there, decide to eat at the Langstone then they will be very happy to see you as they have food and staff for an additional 60 people on Saturday night. Just give them a call to let them know. "Temptress won't be going. We will be holed up and dreaming of a place where the sun always shines and cargo remains on ships decks," says Mark.

Hector Macdonald, bestselling author of THE MIND GAME, will be talking about his new book, THE STORM PROPHET, set around the Sydney Hobart race. He will discuss the race itself, as well as the lifeboat operations that are the focus of the narrative. His website is www.hectormacdonald.com

THE STORM PROPHET is a truly gripping thriller about a vision, a race and the merciless power of the sea.

In the time I knew the boy called Moses, he made three terrible predictions. The first was his own death; the last was something personal to me. But the prediction everyone still talks about is the Sydney Hobart storm.

The Sydney Hobart yacht race is world famous: the crowds at the Boxing Day start; the Harbour full of colour; giant super-maxis competing for line honours and glory. But in the wrong weather, it can be deadly. No one will ever forget the carnage of 1998.

This year, Kirsten McKenzie must win. The bank she’s inherited is in trouble, and desperately needs the PR boost of a race victory. Everyone thinks she’ll do it - she’s got the fastest boat and the best record. Everyone, that is, except a boy called Moses who claims to be able to see the future. He doesn’t foresee victory. He sees a storm, mountains of water. He sees disaster.

Petra Woods is Director of the Sydney New Coastguard. She doesn’t want to believe Moses’ warning, but as the race draws closer and his other predictions start coming true, she might not have a choice. The only option may be to plunge in between the perfect race and the perfect storm.

Over the past 30 years or so Tucker Designs have designed a fair number of yachts which have cruised extensively or circumnavigated.

Some have been production vessels; others "limited editions" ranging in length 5.5-22m. Tony’s experience covers almost all materials/construction; rigs; accommodation; sailplans; as well as odd requirements (berths in the shape of a Cello, another in the shape of a French horn) etc…

The evening starts at 1900 at a service with carols and readings led by organist and choirmaster John Warrell  at St Michael Paternoster Royal (opposite Bell Wharf Lane).

Over the years we have had some stalwart key members for our carol service and none more so than Joan Aubrey Jones  She has tutored our
readers at rehearsal (some who have experienced her ‘tutoring’ might be
tempted to say ‘bullied’!) into brilliant readings at the service. Joan
has now resigned from her tutoring job after at least 15 years and will
be much missed. Luckily Anne Rickwood has agreed to take on the job of
getting our readers in to shape for 2008!

John Warrell, our organist, has also done a brilliant job over the years.
He will be playing the organ for our carols, and bringing his
marvellous choir. With our Honorary Chaplain Revd Bill Christianson
conducting the service, it will be a very merry event.

At 2015 we move to the club with a glass of mulled wine on arrival, followed by a traditional roast turkey dinner and Christmas pudding.

Due to the popularity of this traditional festive evening each member may only bring one guest. Tickets £22.00 per person, book early to secure your place.

To book in advance download the carol service and Christmas dinner booking form.
