Mark is a reader in Archaeology at the University of Bristol. He has a particular interest in history and maritime archaeology, and runs one of the few postgraduate programmes devoted to this.
He has wide ranging archaeological interest of historical periods in both Britain and overseas and has conducted excavations in Zanzibar, Egypt, the Caribbean, as well as numerous sites in Britain.
He is currently writing a book on his twenty years of excavations in Zanzibar.
Mark has presented and contributed to numerous TV archaeology programmes, from the BBC TWO series Time Flyers and the BBC Scotland documentary on the Darien Disaster which was awarded the Archaeological Programme of the Year in 2004.
He was also involved in the early days of Time Team and has contributed to many archaeology programmes on the Discovery and History Channel, for which he has just finished filming a programme on Christopher Columbus.
A keen sailor, Mark spends his spare time sailing his historic 26ft Maurice Griffiths designed yacht or dinghy sailing in Gloucestershire. He also has a rotting dhow in Lamu, Kenya.
Steve Liebmann sails a Swan 42 in the Solent and Channel races. He is also much involved with the the JOG races, and his lecture will give an overview of the JOG and how LSC members can participate, either with their own boats or as crew on others.
Richard Groome, Trustee of Sail 4 Cancer, will be giving tonight's lecture. Richard is responsible for 4 Cancer, the retail side of Sail 4 Cancer
Sail 4 Cancer is a charity based organisation that aims to improve the quality of life for individuals and their families who have been affected by cancer. The charity offers a variety of sailing experiences for individuals and their families affected by cancer, the recently bereaved and carers thereby giving them the opportunity to switch off from the realities of everyday life. Sail 4 Cancer also awards grants for the provision of equipment within cancer wards and hospices.

The ‘Autumn Frolic’, a rally where members enjoy a day of sailing culminating in dinner at the Royal Southampton Yacht Club on the Saturday evening, takes place 6-7 September.
The Club has been fortunate enough to secure the use of the Lutine, Lloyds Yacht Club Flagship yacht, for two weekends each year. The rally coincides with one of those weekends.
The Lutine is a Swan 53 and is a fast and powerful blue water cruising yacht with a professional skipper providing nine crew berths in considerable comfort. We are very fortunate to have the use of such a prestigious yacht for the use of our Members.
The Club Committee have decided that priority will be given to new members and new trainees who will benefit from sailing of this superb yacht, so they will be given first refusal to book a berth.

Colin was a skipper in the first Clipper race in 1996 and has been working with Sir Robin ever since. There have now been a total of six Clipper races representing over 1.75 Million miles of ocean racing.
Despite naming the yachts after international cities, the original aim of opening up ocean racing to a wide spectrum of people, including non sailors, still stands. It is very much a ‘people event’ but never suggest to the crews it is not a real race!

A talk by Jeremy Batch on the history of Limehouse, the Regent’s Canal Dock and London’s Olympic Waterways.
In 1770, the “Acte for Bryngyng of Ye Ryver of Lee to Ye North Side of Ye Citie of London” had come to fulfilment with the opening of the Limehouse Cut, which entered the Thames next to the site where CA House now stands. The huge steel barges which were specially built for the Lee Navigation in the 1920’s may soon be finding a new lease of life, transporting materials via the new Prescott Lock to and from the 2012 Olympic site. The site is located on the Bow Back Rivers, some of which owe their existence to King Alfred’s outwitting of the Danes. Why are there two spellings, Lee and Lea? Who were Duckett and Prescott, and why was Thomas Homer transported to Australia?
