"Many hands make web work"

Daily Sail editor James Boyd prepares to cut the website ribbon

This was the mantra that has taken the Club website from moribund and lacklustre to a dynamic online community with a future. James Boyd, editor of The Daily Sail, was at the Club to cut the red ribbon and deliver a talk on Sailing and the Web.

Screens around the clubroom gave instant access to the website and enabled members to browse content and pages, and sort out any password or login difficulties.

James has a long connection to the Club as his parents and uncle were members. He recalls as a child wondering why the surrounding yachts had red ensigns whilst they had a blue one and was pleased to learn that this time: "It's us that's the elite, the rest are the riff raff."

His career started in print journalism and he worked for Yachting World for 12 years, before taking over the website madforsailing.com, which was relaunched as The Daily Sail. He has been an early proponent of subscription websites, delivering premium content for free and has built up a subscriber base of around 4,000.

"Websites are a reflection of who runs them, who is writing on this one reflects the spirit and ethos of the Club," said James and reminded the audience that as a professional journalist he focuses on accurate, current, edited content at The Daily Sail.

Pictures are important in getting people to notice a site, he said.
