The National Maritime Museum at Greenwich is opening a new permanent gallery devoted to Nelson and the Royal Navy of his time.

Nelson Navy Nation, opening on Trafalagar Day October 21st, focusses on Nelson himslef and explores how the navy shaped both individual lives and course of history.

The gallery places the admiral, a super star in his day, within a historical context and chronicles his achievements and celebrity status.

It also tells the story of the ordinary seamen and their ships with paintings and artefacts from the museum's vast collection. Everything from a letter of an apology when a ship under his command was dismasted early in his career to his last letter to his daughter.
