A petition to HM Government lobbying for the same protection to be given to historic vessels as is given to buildings has already gained 976 signatures.

The petition, 'Protecting floating maritime heritage' can be found on gthe HM Government epetitions website.

Rodney Pell, owner of Sheemaun, a registered historic vessel, says: "There are already 971 signatories and if 3000 is reached then the matter will have to be put before Parliament.  The closing date for submissions is 12th February 2014 and so there is a good chance that with sufficient enthusiasm raised, there will be not only a good press but probably success in bringing to our politicians an awareness of the significance of our historic vessels and the vital importance of their being preserved for all to see and enjoy."
