RYA Radar Course

Why do the course

Radar is becoming increasingly common on small boats. Merchant vessels make intensive use of radar and understanding how it influences their operations makes an important contribution to navigational safety. If a boat carries a radar set, there is a legal obligation to use it under some conditions.

The Club has a number of desktop computers equipped with radar simulation software to aid learning.

Also covered are navigation in reduced visibility and the use of mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA) to calculate closest point of approach (CPA) and time to closest point of approach (TCPA).
