King Charles II founded the Royal Observatory in 1675 to solve the problem of finding longitude at sea. Pete will take us on the journey to establish the best of the two rival theories - by time and the lunar distance. We will be introduced to the Board of Longitude, and will follow the adventures of John Harrison, the famous clockmaker and inventor of the marine chronometer.
“Whereas, in order to the finding out of the longitude of places for perfecting navigation and astronomy, we have resolved to build a small observatory within Our Park at Greenwich...” Charles II
