Racundra's First Cruise
As a fan of Arthur Ransome's 'Swallows and Amazons' series of children's books, I seized the opportunity to review the author's first book on sailing which at the time of original publication was his most successful book.
This edition includes the original edition in its entirety but also shares with the reader, details of his previous boats, 'Slug' and 'Kittiwake', letters to his mother and extract from his diaries. Arthur Ransome's descriptions of passages he made around the Baltic are still true to this day.
How he managed without engine nor any of the modern electronics present day cruising sailors enjoy, is totally amazing. His descriptions of sailing in storm and fog, make excellent reading.
Having just read an article in the Little Ship – Spring 2012, club members are still following Arthur Ransome's footsteps sailing in the Eastern Baltic sea. Today we have the advantage of GPS but the author's descriptions and charts are as valid then as today.
