Why do the course
Knowledge of First Aid makes a vital contribution to sea safety. Being able to manage medical emergencies before professional help arrives can make all the difference both to chances of survival and reducing the impact of serious conditions; on a more commonplace level, knowledge of elementary treatments can make a big difference to crew comfort, which in turn makes a significant contribution to safety. This one-day course is also a pre-requisite for the RYA’s Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore practical examinations.
Content
Resuscitation of the unconscious and immobilisation in the case of broken limbs are the obvious serious conditions covered. Elementary recognition of the symptoms of likely conditions and their treatment are also discussed. Man-overboard situations and hypothermia are treated in some detail. The Club’s course is kept up to date by reference to the latest medical opinion.
The price of the course includes a professional handbook and the standard fee for issue of the RYA’s First Aid certificate.
