Tonight Martin Thomas will be talking about Rum, Sodomy and the Lash.

Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is an account of naval traditions and naval medicine in the age of sail; hear of the harsh discipline, of running the gauntlet, of flogging, of keel-hauling. Hear about the mysteries of scurvy, the scourge of seamen for centuries. Hear of the suffering of Jack Tar from yellow fever, malaria and syphilis. Be astonished by the brutal amputation of injured limbs by naval surgeons aboard a heaving ship at sea, and by the blood and sawdust on the cockpit sole. Finally, hear of the death of Nelson on the Victory in the moment of victory. Be glad you live now and not then.

Martin Thomas is a retired surgeon with an interest in naval history. He used to serve as a Watch Officer on the square rig sail trainer “Sir Winston Churchill” and was Commodore of the Ocean Cruising Club.
