RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Theory Course
Why do the course
The RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster course extends the techniques learned on the Dayskipper course. Some aspects of navigation are studied in more detail and additional seamanship subjects are introduced.
The main elements are additional plane navigation, weather theory and a more rigorous treatment of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea. Additional subjects are introduced, such as stability, basic weather prediction, more detailed use of almanacs and pilots and regulations for sailing in foreign waters. No mathematical knowledge, other than simple arithmetic, is expected.
The Club offers the same options and timetable for the Yachtmaster course as for Dayskipper. A long version and a short version. The long version offers more time for absorbing information and practising techniques. The long version runs for about 22 weeks, from 30 September until 13 April, giving a nominal 44 hours of tuition on Monday evenings from 1900-2100. There will be a break from classes after the 2 December until 6 January.
A pre-course supper is available on Monday and needs to be pre-booked at the Club's restaurant.
The price of the long course is:
Club members £260.00
Non-members £385.00 (includes club membership for the duration of the course).
The short version caters for people with busy lives who cannot commit to the long course. The short version gives the same amount of tuition and covers the same syllabus but runs from 5th February until 8th April and consists of 10 Wednesdays from 1900-2100 and five Saturday classes from 0930-1630 spaced at fortnightly intervals.
A pre-course supper is available on Wednesdays (needs to be pre-booked at the Club's restaurant) and lunch is provided on Saturdays.
The price for the accelerated course is:
Club Members £285.00
Non-members £385.00 (includes club membership for the duration of the course)
The Club’s special Boat Electrics course is open to all, but provides a particularly useful adjunct to the Yachtmaster qualification.
The prices include the provision of all course materials, the RYA Navigation Handbook, the RYA Weather Handbook and "A Seaman's Guide to the Rules of the Road".
In addition students will require a course plotter and nautical dividers kit available as an exclusive Little Ship Club package for only £20. Some 2B pencils, an eraser and pencil sharpener are also essential items. The Course Leader may suggest additional reading material.
