RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Theory Course
RYA COASTAL SKIPPER/YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE SHOREBASED COURSE
RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore course extends the techniques learned on the Day Skipper course. Some aspects of navigation are studied in more detail and additional seamanship subjects are introduced.
Course topics include:
- position fixing
- course shaping and plotting
- tidal knowledge
- use of almanac and admiralty publications
- electronic position finding equipment
- taking and interpreting forecasts
- plotting weather systems
- weather predictions using a barometer and by observation
- collision regulations
- customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad
It allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to the advanced navigation techniques. No mathematical knowledge, other than simple arithmetic, is expected.
The Club runs two versions of the course
Option 1 - Long Course - about 22 weeks - from 28th September until 12th April, giving a nominal 44 hours of tuition on Monday evenings from 1900-2100. There will be a break from classes after the 30th November until 4th January. A pre-course supper is available on Monday and needs to be pre-booked at the Club's restaurant.
The price of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Option 1 - Long course is:
Club members £285.00
Option 2 - Accelerated Course - about 10 weeks - from 3rd February until 7th April, giving a nominal 44 hours tuition on 10 Wednesdays from 1900-2100 and five Saturday classes from 0930-1630 spaced at fortnightly intervals. A pre-course supper is available on Wednesdays (needs to be pre-booked at the Club's restaurant) and lunch is provided on Saturdays.
The Saturday classes will take place on 6th & 20th February, 6th & 20th March and 3rd April.
The price of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Option 2 - accelerated course is:
Club Members £285.00
The prices include the provision of all course materials, the RYA Navigation Handbook, the RYA Weather Handbook and "A Seaman's Guide to the Rules of the Road".
Students need to have:
- Course plotter and nautical dividers kit (available at Little Ship Club for £20)
- 2B pencils
- Pencil sharpener
- The Course Leader may suggest additional reading material.
